Considered the most powerful agent in football, Drew Rosenhaus represents countless NFL stars including Tyreek Hill, Darius Slay, D.J. Moore, Aaron Jones, J.C. Jackson and Rob Gronkowski. Appearing Thursday at Hill’s introductory press conference with the Dolphins (who acquired him 24 hours earlier in a blockbuster trade with Kansas City), Rosenhaus was asked about Gronk, who remains unsigned over a week into NFL free agency.

Most anticipated Gronk would return to the Buccaneers in short order following news of Tom Brady’s return, though obviously that hasn’t happened. The 32-year-old tight end appears genuinely torn on whether to return for what would be his third season in Tampa Bay or call it a career, content with his four Super Bowl rings and 93 touchdowns, the latter good for third all-time among NFL tight ends. Rosenhaus says he’s been in communication with the Bucs, touching base with them as recently as Wednesday.
Gronkowski remained a productive player in 2021, finishing third among tight ends in receiving yards per game (66.8) behind only Mark Andrews and Travis Kelce. However, the five-time Pro Bowler may not be anxious to put his body through another year of punishment, particularly after missing a chunk of last season due to injury (fractured ribs and a punctured lung cost him five games). With his legacy and financial future both secure (without factoring in endorsements, he’s pocketed over $70 million in career earnings), Gronk has little left to prove on an NFL gridiron, though as we’ve seen with Brady, football can be a tough habit to kick.
While Gronk’s hometown Bills say they’d welcome him with open arms, if the future Hall-of-Famer does commit to another season, it’s hard to see him playing anywhere but Tampa Bay.
