Bailey Zappe might be starting to show the Patriots that they have something in 24-year-old following an impressive road win over the Denver Broncos on Sunday.
Bill Belichick spoke highly of the second-year quarterback, who is now 2-2 in four starts this season and 4-2, including the starts he made last year.
With the Patriots slated currently fourth in the NFL Draft order, a quarterback could certainly be on the table, but does Zappe feel he deserves the starting role in 2024?
“Right now, I just try to be where my feet are and focus on the Bills,” he told WEEI’s “Jones & Mego” on Tuesday. “I’m sure those conversations and things like that will happen in the offseason and after the Jets games but right now just focused on the Bills; it’s going to be a challenge offensively. … Those conversations will come up once the Jets game ends into the offseason.”
In the last four games, Zappe has six touchdowns to two interceptions, throwing for 817 yards and a 68% completion rate.
He has two games remaining against two very tough defenses in the Bills and Jets, but Zappe feels he is getting more confident with each game.
“The more reps and extra reps we get after practice, whether it’s the receivers, or the o-line, and the running backs and pass protection – the more I get with those guys, I think the more comfortable we’re all going to get together,” Zappe said. “The more comfortable I’m going to get with the system, over time, of course. The more we play in it the better you are. As far as confidence and everything, that comes from my teammates and those guys…the o-line was phenomenal the past game… It’s been a long year; excited to be where we’re at now. We’re playing a tough team in the Bills, but excited to play them.”
