Mac Jones is an emotional guy, but Bill Belichick doesn’t think he lets those emotions get the best of him.
Jones is like many players, really. He gets excited when there’s something to get excited about, but it can be palpable when he’s displeased. Depending on how it’s handled, that either can be a non-issue or something that ends up becoming a problem.
Being outwardly emotional is something that has been a criticism of Jones, though, most notably with his college coach, Nick Saban, saying that Jones controlling his emotions was the "biggest hurdle" facing him.
During his weekly appearance on the “Greg Hill Show”, Belichick said he’s fine with Jones’ demeanor.
“He’s calm, he’s focused, he understands what’s going on from play-to-play, what the situation is,” Belichick said. “I think the energy that he brings on a positive play with his teammates or sometimes a little bit of when something doesn’t go well, you see a little bit of emotion. I don’t think those are necessarily bad things unless they get in the way of the next play and the execution and what’s going to happen going forward.
“But overall, his demeanor and energy are good, and his focus is good. I can’t think of too many cases where that’s really affected his execution of the following play that just carried over and became a problem. I think the way he handles himself on the field is good, really good.”
If nothing else, it just reaffirms that Jones cares about winning. As long as he doesn't start drawing penalties or bringing himself or his teammates down, then it seems like Belichick is fine with the way Jones handles himself.
