Bill Belichick has sent some mixed messages relating to the Patriots quarterback competition.

After Mac Jones was selected, he said Cam Newton was the team's quarterback. Last week, he said it would be a tough decision deciding between the two, but then a few sentences later said Newton was the starting quarterback.

On Thursday, speaking with NFL Media's Willie McGinest, Belichick acknowledged it's a healthy competition.

“Cam’s getting better every day. Mac is getting better every day. They are pushing each other," he said. "Competition makes us all better, so it’s been healthy and we’ll see how it goes.”

As for the rest of the team, Belichick seems excited about the new year.

“A lot of new faces and it’s coming together day-by-day," he said. "We have a long way to go, but I am excited to work with the players that we’ve added to the team. I am excited to see some of the guys back that didn’t play last year, and excited to see the guys back that did play last year. We have a long way to go and we’ll just take it day-by-day and watch the team come together and form its own chemistry and as a coaching staff figure out what our strengths and weaknesses are and try and maximize them.”
