Bill Belichick hints Julian Edelman won’t be returning many punts this season

Julian Edelman has proven over the years that he is a dynamic punt returner, having returned 177 over the course of his career.

But, given his age and importance to the team, he did not return a single one last season, and listening to Bill Belichick Wednesday, that likely will be the case again in 2020.

“Obviously, we have a couple guys back there with experience,” he said. “Obviously, Julian [Edelman] as a punt returner has done that throughout his career, but that’s something that we haven’t used him as much on as in the past, and I think that’s probably the right thing to do.

“Although, we’ll certainly need his availability at some point, I’m sure.”

Belichick could be referring to potentially using him in that role for the postseason, or even in a regular-season game depending on the situation.

Other players who could factor into the mix are Gunner Olszeswski, Devin Ross and rookie Kyle Dugger, who set records at D-II Lenoir-Rhyne.
