the greg hill show: bill belichick says the patriots haven't made a decision at quarterback
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick made overseas waves on Sunday morning in Germany when, with under two minutes to go in their contest versus the Colts, he decided to bench starting quarterback Mac Jones in favor of Bailey Zappe.
Jones was having a subpar game, to say the least, and had just thrown an inexcusable interception in the red zone that ultimately cost his team a chance to win the game.
Unfortunately, Zappe wasn’t much better on the final drive. He also turned the ball over with a baffling interception, throwing a pass into triple coverage that was picked off by safety Rodney Thomas and sealed the deal on the 10-6 loss and put them at 2-8 on the season.
New England’s quarterback room is in a bad place and, on Monday’s edition of WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show, Bill Belichick said that his team hasn’t made a decision on who will be their signal caller moving forward:
“Yeah, I don’t know we haven’t really talked about that,” he told the show. “We’re just getting back from Germany. Just trying to get reorganized here so. We haven’t talked about any of that.”
Belichick was also asked if Zappe, who was (unfairly) called upon to try and win the game on Sunday, was ready for the moment:
“Yeah. We’ve worked the two-minute drill,” the head coach explained. “He’s gotten a lot of opportunities on that and he’s actually done pretty well with it.”
Mac Jones has now been benched three times over the course of this season, with Sunday’s potentially being the final straw. Belichick was asked where Jones' confidence is at following the loss.
“Well I mean look, we’re not having the kind of success we want to have but, I mean, we’re all competitors. We all show up to work every day and every week. You’d have to ask Mac that question though.”
Belichick also spoke about the discipline of J.C. Jackson, the Patriots’ failed punt block attempt, and more on Monday’s edition of WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show. You can listen to the full interview here.
