You can officially remove one name from the Patriots' offensive coordinator search.

According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Bill O'Brien is heading to Columbus to become the next offensive coordinator of the Ohio State Buckeyes.

O'Brien returned to the Patriots in 2023 after a 12-year hiatus from Foxborough, and the offense struggled mightily under his lead. New England scored just 13.9 points per game (last in the NFL), and gained just 276.2 yards per game (30th in the NFL).

In between O'Brien's two stints in New England, the 54-year-old was the head coach at Penn State from 2012-2013 and then became the head coach of the Houston Texans from 2014-2020. His most recent stop before his return to the Patriots was as the Alabama Crimson Tide's offensive coordinator from 2021-2022.

O'Brien now returns to the BIG10 for a second time, this time under Ohio State head coach Ryan Day. The Patriots, meanwhile, will have a new offensive coordinator for a fourth straight season.
