6 rings and football things: bill o'brien to boston college?
Bill O'Brien has called an audible on his post-Patriots coaching journey.
After originally accepting a job as the offensive coordinator at Ohio State, O'Brien is now set to become the next head coach of the Boston College Eagles according to ESPN's Pete Thamel. Thamel writes, "A deal is expected soon, giving BC a well-regarded coach with extensive NFL experience and strong local ties."
O'Brien's move to Chestnut Hill was first reported on Thursday evening by Kevin Stone of the New England Football Journal.
Following a sub-par season in Foxborough, O'Brien was set to call the Buckeye's offensive under head coach Ryan Day. However when Jeff Hafley left Boston College late last month become the Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator, he was immediately connected to the Eagles job. Now, the offensive guru taking it.
O'Brien, 54, was born in Boston, attended St. John's Prep in Danvers, and went to Brown University in Rhode Island. He's a New England guy through and through, and even cited returning to the area as one of the reasons why he took the Patriots' offensive coordinator job last season.
"I'm from here," O'Brien explained prior to last season about returning to the sidelines in Foxborough. "My family lives here, my wife went to Boston College. Very familiar with the area so, you know all of that played into our decision as a family to come back here. I think that was the big thing, it wasn't about one person, it was about the whole package so to speak."
O'Brien has experience as a head coach at both the college and professional level. He served as Penn State's head coach from 2012-2013, posting a 15-9 record with the Nittany Lions, as well as the Houston Texans head coach from 2014-2020. He led the Texans to four playoff appearances.
