Jerod Mayo could be on the move this offseason.
The Browns, who fired their defensive coordinator, Joe Woods, have requested to interview Mayo for the role, according to multiple reports.
Since Mayo is listed as the Patriots’ linebackers coach, the position would be a promotion.
Mayo, 36, has been on the Patriots’ staff since 2019. He’s believed to share coordinator responsibilities with Steve Belichick, who calls the defense during games.
Last year, the Broncos interviewed Mayo for their vacant head coaching position.
A couple of weeks ago, Mayo reiterated his desire to be a head coach in the NFL.
“I think I’m ready to be a head coach in the league,” he told reporters.
If that’s Mayo’s goal, being an official defensive coordinator might be the best stepping stone, even if the position is in Cleveland. Brian Flores is a reported candidate as well.
