Who will start Week 1 for the Patriots -- Cam Newton or Mac Jones?
Even Newton himself doesn't know the answer to that question and he seemed perplexed when asked if Bill Belichick has told him if he would be the starter against Miami.
“Y’all know the answer to that question," Newton said to reporters in Philly on Monday, even going on to say the question was "silly."
He added: “Y’all sitting up here asking silly questions to me and I am looking at y’all with the same thing. I don’t know what y’all want me to say. You know that. You know he hasn’t said that. So, for you to just ask the question, you know, it is what it is. Every single day I am coming out here with the anticipation to just get better and that’s the only thing I can do. I can control that, but as far as somebody else’s analogy or their interpretation of what Week 1 is, I am trying to focus on what tomorrow brings, even adjustments for tonight’s meeting.”
Newton was then told Belichick has said a few times since the draft that he is the starter and the media is trying to find out more information on exactly what that means.
“I don’t take (your questions) personal. I just want you guys to understand, everything y’all know, I know," Newton said. "There’s no hidden motives or things like that. I do know those things like that, I can’t worry about. Because each and every day, I don’t necessarily care about who’s starting, I mostly care about making sure I put the best product out there for me, and I know Mac (Jones) is feeling the same way, I know Brian (Hoyer) is feeling the same way and everybody else, going down each and every position.
“As far as Week 1, we’ve got so much to worry about prior to Week 1. And that’s where my focus is right now.”
The Patriots will practice with the Eagles again Tuesday before Thursday's preseason game.
