Cam Newton doesn’t want to discuss testing positive for COVID-19

FOXBOROUGH — Cam Newton’s postgame video press conference following the Patriots’ 18-12 loss to the Broncos was the first time the quarterback has spoken since testing positive for COVID-19 over two weeks ago, but he did not want to talk about it.

“Honestly, for me right now I am just trying to move forward,” he said. “Obviously, respectfully, that was two weeks ago. Still bitter over the game and just trying to focus on ways to just get better. Obviously, everyone knows what the situation was. It is what it is and I just know for me, here moving forward, I just have to play better football and that is what my job is to do.”

Newton added: “I know exactly what it is, it’s just respectfully for the sake of where we are right now, I don’t think it is beneficial for me to speak on that being obviously the performance today.”

The quarterback finished 17-for-25 passing with 157 yards and two interceptions for a QB rating of 51.6. He did add 76 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

It took awhile for Newton to get going, which he acknowledged was a byproduct of so much down time.

“The time off showed,” Newton said. “But, like I said I have to be better and I will be better.”

Following the loss, the Patriots are now 2-3 and below .500 in October or later for the first time since Nov. 10, 2002.

They will host the 49ers this coming Sunday.
