As it turns out, Bill Belichick isn’t Cam Newton’s biggest backer in New England.
That honor belongs to J. Charles Wiggins.
On “The Greg Hill Show” Friday, the boys were listing their top-10 quarterbacks — thanks to inspiration from Tim Kelly of Audacy Sports. Wiggy started off his list with a shocking name, albeit one that lives up to his schtick: Cam Newton.
He’s a top-10 quarterback — me and Chris Simms,” Wiggy said. “Great minds think alike.”
(Simms, for what it’s worth, ranked Newton at No. 20 on his much-discussed list.)
Though it is outrageous for Wiggy to place Newton in his top 10 (8 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions!), it’s a position he’s defended many times before. As a result, the hounds turned towards Gary Tanguay, who put Tom Brady at No. 1.
Tanguay’s argument? Brady wins.
“This is you stat geeks,” Tanguay said. “Everyone has to look at the passer raring and this and that and all of the saber metrics and crap. A guy went to a brand new team — a team that was a doormat, a team that was 7-9 and had a quarterback that threw 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions — this guy took this team and he led them to a Super Bowl.”
There’s no way the Buccaneers would’ve won the Super Bowl without Brady. He changed the entire culture of the team. But it is worth mentioning that the Buccaneers’ defense kept them in the NFC Championship, where Brady threw three interceptions in the first half.
He outplayed Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl, however, slinging three touchdown passes in a blowout win.
Brady is closer to No. 1 than Newton is to No. 10. Let’s just put it that way.
