Bill Belichick: Cam Newton is our starting quarterback

FOXBOROUGH — At least as of now, it appears Cam Newton will be the Patriots’ starting quarterback for 2021.

Speaking prior to practice Saturday morning, Bill Belichick was asked about the quarterback competition between Cam Newton and Mac Jones, and if he had a timeframe on when he’d like to make a decision?

“No. Cam is our starting quarterback, I think I've said that,” he said.

This came following saying it would be a “hard decision” to a question of what he is looking for at the position.

“We’ll take a look at the whole situation,” Belichick said. “I don’t think you want to evaluate players at any position off of one or two plays, or maybe a day. So from a consistency standpoint, that is always important, and obviously production. So, hopefully those things will be good. And I am sure it will be a hard decision, but we’ll see how it goes. Let them play and try and do what we feel like is best for the team based on their performance.”

Belichick did seem to contradict himself a bit, but reading in between the lines, as of now Newton is the starting quarterback. But, if Jones can gain consistency by the end of training camp and perform better than Newton, he will earn the job.

So, while Belichick said Newton is the starting quarterback, that doesn’t mean it can’t change before Week 1.
