For all the doubt and intrigue surrounding his abilities after a less than stellar 2020 season with the Patriots, it appears as though Cam Newton still has it -- with the fans.
And wants to prove he still has it on the field, too.
In a video posted to his YouTube channel, which has a raw documentary feel to it, Newton is seen walking through some woods and back alleys to get to a field in Los Angeles for a workout consisting of stretching and throwing. The alternate route must have been chosen to avoid paparazzi so his team could control the media. After the workout Newton, a personality larger than life who literally towers over every player and fan, took time to pose for photos with every person on site.
Odell Beckham Jr. was also seen, as he was working out at the same field. He and Newton shared a quick embrace.
Short vignettes as such, though released through his Iconic Saga Productions (we’ll keep the font normal here) highlight that Newton, despite his struggles in New England last season, still has the luster and appeal with fans we’ve heard other players talk about, most recently new linebacker Matthew Judon, who said “SuperCam” was the player he was most excited to play with on the Patriots.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick said on draft night after the team chose Mac Jones No. 15 overall that Newton was the starter until further notice. So for now, for those wondering about Newton's status as QB1? It’s much like his status as a star, unquestioned.
What happens as the most intriguing training camp in recent Patriots history unfolds remains to be seen. Stay tuned. I’m sure there will be plenty of updates on Newton's channels.
