FOXBOROUGH -- As it relates to the Patriots quarterback competition, it feels over the last few practices there's been an increase in reps for Mac Jones in relation to Cam Newton, especially during team periods.
The rookie has taken Brian Hoyer's reps, so Newton still goes first, but then Jones gets an extended look.
So, how does Newton feel about it?
"I don't get involved in the reps," Newton said Thursday. "I just do what I'm asked and I just go from there. As far as trying to maximize as much as I possibly can when I'm in there, that's the only thing I can control and that's what I will continue to do."
As for himself personally, he's just looking to get better each day.
"The thing for me and everybody else is to just keep improving," Newton said. "A lot is just take with the first couple of days, but the realization of body demeanors, different skill sets, different sizes, different athleticism, different elusiveness, and then playing in the weather today. There's so many different factors that you just got to weigh in. But being a signal-caller you just gotta be able to deliver and do your job.
"That process will take time. It's just a day-to-day thing. It's going to take the repetitiveness from the side little work deals after practice, before practice that we can see what each other is seeing and talk about it more normal, rather than having a play happen and it not go to our liking, then we have to re-do it again. Hopefully those kinks will be ironed out, and that's what I'm expecting.
Newton continues to battle with Jones for the starting job.
