FOXBOROUGH -- Cam Newton and Mac Jones are two different people.
The two play the quarterback position differently and even have different personalities, as Newton is outgoing and Jones a bit more serious.
But, speaking after the Patriots' preseason game Thursday night, Newton revealed something he admires about the rookie.
"I know he came to me and talked to me and we talked it out about just his expectation," Newton said after the Patriots' 22-13 win over Washington. "Every young quarterback goes through it, the excitement, the anticipation. He wants to be so perfect, and I see his preparation is always pristine. That's what I admire about him, being at such a young age he knows how to prepare and knows when Josh [McDaniels] asks quick questions or when a person asks quick questions he knows how to kind of have answers for it."
Jones relieved Newton Thursday after the veteran played the first two series. The rookie played the next five, which lasted into the third quarter and went 13-of-19 passing for 87 yards.
The moment of his first NFL game was not too big as he seemed in control the entire way and made smart, solid throws.
Despite the two battling for the starting job, Newton said they will both be supportive of one another.
"But for him and today's performance, he's just going to keep getting better, and we're going to be here for each other along this whole process, and that's what we're here for," he said.
In his two drives, Newton was 4-for-7 with 49 yards.
