Even though the Patriots are 6-9 on the year and were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs last week, Cam Newton has stayed very positive all year long.
But, following the 38-9 loss to the Bills on Monday night in which the quarterback was pulled, Newton expressed his frustration publicly for the first time all season.
It came in response to a question about his sleep schedule, which was shown on the ESPN broadcast that he goes to bed at 11:30 p.m. and is up at 4:20 a.m.
“That’s been my schedule for 90 percent of the time that I’ve been here, so you can kind of understand the frustration that I do have when I don’t have the outcome because I am sacrificing so much," Newton said. "You’re talking to a person who hasn’t seen his kids in three months. Obviously, the contract is what it is. Submitting myself to this team is something that I’ve been doing since Day 1 — being accessible. And yeah, it’s frustrating.
"It makes you mad. It makes you angry knowing that to be a trusted teammate you first have to submit to authority and submit to what the coaches are asking you to do and I feel like I have done that. I’m not in the place to blame, I am more or less venting right now because I have sacrificed so much this year and it hurts when you have an outing [like] tonight and just to go home and start it over for a whole other week.”
Newton said lack of sleep has always been an issue he's dealt with.
Before being pulled, the quarterback was 5-for-10 passing with 34 yards, while adding 24 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
