Charlie Weis knows a thing or two about how the Patriots operate having served as offensive coordinator from 2000-04.

The 65-year-old hyped up Mac Jones to the Patriots during the pre-draft process, so it isn't a surprise following the Alabama QB going No. 15 overall to New England he's a fan.

“He fits the system as I know it," he said Friday morning on The Greg Hill Show. "… This is a guy who fits perfect to the system that I know.”

Weis added: “You’re going to be really happy with what you’re getting. Pin-point accuracy. Team leader. Has something about him, he’s got a lot of moxie. You have great anticipation. He’s a gym rat. He’s smart. You’re going to be really happy with this kid.”

The former offensive coordinator, who now works for SiriusXM NFL Radio, said he doesn't think the Patriots had to take a QB in the first round, it was just how the board played out.

“I think going into the draft there were probably a couple of guys who [Bill Belichick] liked in the first round, and a couple of guys he liked in the second round," Weis said. "I think depending on how things fell, it wouldn’t have ruled out the possibility of him not taking a quarterback at all in the first round. Once [Justin] Fields and Jones got past that 10 spot, now all of a sudden you say, ‘Hey, we have a chance to sit tight right here and be able to get one of these guys without giving up any draft collateral.’ I think it couldn’t have worked out any better than it did for the Patriots.”
