Curran: ‘The gap is significant’ between Jacoby Brissett, Drake Maye right now

Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt said Tuesday that Jacoby Brissett is New England’s starting quarterback at the moment and that there’s “no timetable” for when third overall pick Drake Maye might take over.

NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran believes that might not be for a while. Making his weekly appearance on Gresh & Fauria on Tuesday, Curran said the gap between the two is “significant” and that Maye has a lot of work to do to close it. (Listen to the full interview above.)

“He’s got nothing to sweat at the moment,” Curran said of Brissett. “I mean, the gap is significant, not because Drake Maye stinks, but because Jacoby Brissett is, in this offense, at this stage, in just t-shirts and shorts, he more than fully looks the part.

“Now, might it look differently during training camp and there are actually live bullets flying and he is having to process things and he's not getting the protection that he needs? Maybe. But right now, the gap is so significant that -- it's an inevitable question, he is being paid to answer it -- but he's also saying, well, that's not happening anytime soon.

“I think that's really clear, and I believe the team as a whole believes the same thing, whether it's Alex Van Pelt or Eliot Wolf or [Jerod] Mayo to an extent or even [Ben] McAdoo. They're looking at the offense and saying, we're fine, we got Jacoby, we can take as long as we want with Drake Maye.”

Brissett and Maye both struggled during Tuesday’s OTA session, which you can read more about here:
