Things could go a number of different ways for Cam Newton this summer.
The 32-year-old could have a terrific training camp and prove he deserves to start over rookie Mac Jones. He could lose out to the rookie and be a backup all year, or he could also lose out on the job and then be released.
All are legitimate possibilities, and what if it's one of the last two?
According to Deion Sanders on NFL Total Access late last week, it could be the end of Newton's career, which is why the former cornerback believes the QB will be more ready than ever this summer.
"If I know Cam, though, he's going to be ready to compete,” Sanders said. “I don't know how long they're going to give him, but Cam is going to be ready to compete because this is it. This is it. This is it. You don't get this one, it's a wrap. And I think Cam is ready to compete."
Newton obviously struggled as the Patriots' starter in 2020, but did have several factors working against him, including COVID and a lack of weapons to work with.
But, things are different this year.
The veteran will be competing with Jones, who had a solid spring as a rookie, and since he was the No. 15 overall pick is the quarterback of the future for the team. If he's ready to start, the assumption is he will, so it really isn't totally in Newton's hands.
Training camp will begin in late July.
