No one really knows what Cam Newton's status is for Monday night's game against the Broncos, but Denver will be ready if it is indeed the former NFL MVP.
Speaking to reporters in Denver Friday, coach Vic Fangio said his team has been preparing all week as if Newton will be under center.
“We’ve been under that assumption the whole time that he would be playing, and then adjust if he’s not just like Kansas City did last week when he got the late positive test in the week," he said. "Just like Pittsburgh did against us when [QB] Drew [Lock] got hurt in the second series, just like you have to do every week in case the starter doesn’t play for whatever reason. So, we’re anticipating Newton playing but we’ll be ready if he’s not the quarterback.”
Newton is on the COVID list, but with the game being moved from Sunday afternoon to Monday night, it gives him an extra day to get cleared.
A few Broncos players did not like the game change on social media Thursday night, but Fangio said it's something they will need to adjust to.
“From the start of this season—all the way back to when training camp started—we all knew that the NFL would not go clean with no positive tests for the entire season," he said. "We knew there would be some positive tests and that those positive tests would cause some inconveniences and change of schedules and adjustments. And it just so happens now that we’re part of the adjustments because New England is our opponent this week—they’ve had some positive tests—so, it’s on us to be able to adjust, adapt and improvise and be ready to play the game on Monday night. I’m confident that we will do that.”
