Devin McCourty’s allegiance is to the Patriots … even when he’s deciding whether to continue his NFL career.
On Thursday night, Chargers defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day, a fellow Rutgers alumnus, tweeted at McCourty in an attempt to bring him to the Chargers. “Dev what’s good, I hear you’re a free agent is that correct?,” he tweeted, complete with a lightning bolt emoji.
Though the Chargers currently employ two ex-Pats on defense — J.C. Jackson and Kyle Van Noy — it doesn’t sound like McCourty is considering the possibility. He tweeted back that he “only looks good in a Pats uniform bro.”
He added four crying-laughing emojis to further accentuate his point.
Last month, McCourty said he would make a decision on retirement prior to the start of NFL free agency, which begins next Monday with the legal tampering period. At 35 years old, he played in all 17 games for the Patriots last season, recording 71 tackles — his highest total since 2018. The 13-year vet leads all active NFL players with 35 career interceptions.
Earlier this offseason, Matthew Slater, another Patriots stalwart, announced he was coming back for another season in Foxborough. We’ll see if McCourty follows suit.
