Drake Maye compared to Tom Brady in one key intangible

By nature of where he plays, Patriots’ No. 3 overall pick Drake Maye is inevitably going to be compared to New England franchise legend and GOAT QB Tom Brady at some point in his professional career.

It is what it is. It comes with the job.

But at least one veteran coach who’s worked with both quarterbacks in the past is already making those comparisons in one key area of intangibles before Maye has even taken part in his first padded NFL practice.

In an insightful feature from MassLive.com, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant and North Carolina offensive analyst Clyde Christensen saw similar ever-present competitive nature from TB12 and the guy taking over the No. 10 jersey in New England.

“(Drake) just has a playfulness. Tom (Brady) had the same thing, a playfulness where they love to compete,” Christensen said. “They love to win $5 off you. They love to win a $2 bet. Nobody loves winning a $2 bet better than Tom Brady. This guy has the same kind of fun, ‘Hey, I’ll bet you that you can’t hit the crossbar from here, Clyde.’ Always, everything turns into a competition.”

Beyond getting one of the first early comparisons between Maye and Brady out of the way, the MassLive feature also details the young quarterback growing up in a household with three brothers who were equally competitive, his crossing paths with legendary college coach Nick Saban and NBA superstar Steph Curry and the leadership he showed on both the football field and the basketball court at a young age.

And according to Christensen, Maye coming from a tight athletic family that’s produced brothers who won National Championships in both basketball and baseball may just be a factor in the quarterback’s own past and future successes.

“It’s funny that the really great players that I’ve been around just came from great families,” Christensen mused. “Which, it may be random, it may not be. I don’t know. But everyone from the Hasselbecks to the Bradys to the Mannings to the Lucks, they just were special families — and this kid has the same thing.”
