Drake Maye shares update amid injury rumors ahead of Super Bowl LX

Quarterback Drake Maye is the talk of social media speculation thanks to a tough hit he took during the AFC Championship Game Sunday, with at least one doctor, (who does not treat Maye), wondering whether he hurt himself on the play.

During his weekly appearance on ‘WEEI Afternoons,’ Maye described himself as perhaps a little tuckered out by a year of football, but not because of any particular play from their defeat of the Broncos.

“I’m feeling good. We’re going to got some extra rest. Really, I don’t think it’s from the game,” he said, when asked specifically about whether he injured his right shoulder during the game. “I think it’s from the build-up of throwing almost, including training camp, 30 weeks straight of throwing, and four days a week, it can add up. But I think we’ve got some extra rest. Feeling good and ready to go for the Super Bowl.”

Interestingly, when WEEI’s Andy Hart asked whether Maye expects to be limited – either in practice or the impending big game – Maye said it’s too soon to know.

“I think it’s too early to say. Right now as I throw, I’m feeling good,” he said. “Looking forward to getting out there, prepping for the Seahawks and getting ready to go.”

David J. Chao, who identifies himself as a former NFL doctor and has served as a commentator on potential NFL injuries across media platforms in the past, opined on social media Monday that Maye could have hurt his throwing shoulder on a hard hit in the third quarter of Sunday’s game. It’s worth noting that following that play, he completed a near-perfect deep pass off a flea-flicker to Mack Hollins for 31 yards.
