Drake Maye’s Week 17 game against the Jets was sick – in every sense of the word.
Maye’s passer rating during the three quarters in which he played was 157, just shy of a perfect 158.3.
But broadcast cameras caught him coughing on the sideline, and he sounded a bit congested postgame. During his weekly interview on ‘WEEI Afternoons,’ he downplayed the illness, but confirmed that he wasn’t feeling totally himself.
“Yeah, I was just a little bit – runny nose, a little bit of a cough,” Maye said. “But shoot, we battled the elements and came out with the win, so that’s what mattered.”
When asked whether the game could be compared to Michael Jordan’s “Flu Game” during Game 5 of the 1997 Finals, he waved it off:
“Nothing like that, just another day.”
The game was the 12th instance this season in which he posted a passer greater than 100. His 256 passing yards also pushed him over the 4,000 mark, earning himself a new moniker: 4K Maye.
“Jeez Louise, you’ve got to love these nicknames, huh. Now you’ve got my buddies saying that. Any time you’re with those two quarterbacks you’re in great company,” Maye laughed.
