The Patriots have been the most active team in this first week of free agency, which isn’t much of a surprise since they entered the week with the third-most cap space in the NFL (around $60 million).
Even after all the additions that have been made, there are still a few other needs that need to be addressed.
So, how much cap space are the Patriots working with as of Thursday morning?
According to Miguel Benzan (@patscap), the Patriots currently have just over $26 million in cap space, but that does not include the additions of Trent Brown, Justin Bethel and Ted Karras.
Bethel and Karras should be very minimal hits, while Brown likely will be in the $7-8 million range for 2021.
Based on all that, it seems the Patriots have roughly $16-19 million in cap space to work with, so clearly plenty of money to still spend on additional players.
One thing to keep in mind is they currently have 77 players on their 90-man roster, as well as having nine draft picks. Clearly, some cuts/trades will be taking place in the coming weeks.
The cap number will continue to change daily, but the bottom line is even with all the moves that have been made this week, the money is still there to add even more.
