Former NFL executive on OMF takes issue with Bill Belichick's salary cap comments

By now everyone has heard Bill Belichick's comments relating to the salary cap and the Patriots this season.

Former Green Bay packers vice president and current writer for MMQB Andrew Brandt took issue with them.

He tweeted: “Bill Belichick blaming the Salary Cap for his team's issues is a good one; not surprised he would say it, but surprised anyone would believe it. They have the lowest payroll in the league by far, around $150 million (Cap is $200 million).”

Brandt joined Ordway, Merloni & Fauria Tuesday and further explain why he has such an issue with the comments.

“I don’t understand management, him or anyone else, that blames the cap," he said. "We live in a system in football that we have to have all these things designed to create competitive balance. We have a draft, inverse order. We have free agency restrictions, can’t be a free agent until four years in, and then you have franchise tags. And we have a cap. Cap is a level playing field. But, don’t blame it for anything because you have people like I did in Green Bay, you have people that their job is to manage that. And it is supervised by the general manager and to make sure that is not an issue for not being the team you want to be.

“And the other part of it that I mentioned is they have not been a high-spending team, a low-spending team. People who want to blame the cap are usually people that have as he said sold out — where the Rams give up No. 1 picks to get Jalen Ramsey and given him to the biggest contract in history where teams that sign a lot of free agents at high prices, the teams that give up on draft picks and go for it with veterans.

"That doesn’t apply to the Patriots. I don’t get that.”
