What the Patriots will do at quarterback is one of the biggest storylines across the NFL heading into the draft this week.
NFL Network's Mike Giardi joined Mut at Night with Andy Hart Monday, and gave the latest on what he's hearing.
Many believe the Patriots will look to trade up into the top 10 to select a quarterback, but not Giardi.
“I think they are interested in quarterback, but a couple of weeks ago [it] was the Patriots are going to trade up into the top five and they are going to get the Falcons pick and they are going to get their quarterback. I don’t sense that that is — I mean, I shouldn’t say that. If a deal was really sweet they might do it, but the deal isn’t going to be really sweet to get that high up," he said. "To me, it looks like, unless someone really falls into that 12-13 range, I don’t see it.”
Giardi believes Jimmy Garoppolo being traded from the 49ers seems to make the most sense.
“To me, the Jimmy thing is the one that makes sense," he said. "… They are interested in the player. [Bill Belichick] loved the player. He didn’t want to trade the player, whether he was made to trade the player or just realized, ‘Hey look, we can’t do this anymore. We might as well get something for him and trade him somewhere [I] like.’ Even the way that was handled shows how he feels about Jimmy. The idea of having him come back, he knows the system. Clearly, an upgrade as a passer from the guy that they have in there (Cam Newton), and don’t give me the advanced analytics of him that some people did this year on Cam.
"I think that is the thing that makes the most sense because they feel their team is ready to win now. I don’t know whether it is championship-quality with or without Garoppolo — definitely not without. With, if you get the max out of Jimmy, maybe. I think that is the thing that is most palpable.”
