The Patriots' 2023 season starts on Wednesday, but that doesn’t mean they’re done building their roster. They're not even close, actually.
The team brought in several players, both rookies and vets, for workouts on Monday with the hopes of potentially adding some competition to the fold. Here’s a quick run down on each of them:
QB Matt McKay
After spending some time during rookie camp with the Dallas Cowboys, New England brought quarterback Matt McKay in for a workout on Monday. McKay played four years of college football, most recently at Elon, and his 6-foot-4 build would bring some athleticism to the Patriots QB room.
He threw for 2,690 yards and 21 touchdowns for the Phoenix last season along with 458 yards on the ground and three scores.
DT Bruce Hector
Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Patriots also worked out Bruce Hector on Monday. The 6-foot-2 296-pound defensive tackle played at the University of South Florida and after going undrafted in 2018, has bounced around the NFL - most recently for the Detroit Lions. Hector was then selected by the Arlington Renegades in the 2023 XFL Draft and won the XFL championship with the club.
He has 7 tackles and 0.5 sacks over his NFL career.
LB Diego Fagot
Peanut butter and jelly or Bill Belichick and Navy football? Former Midshipmen linebacker Diego Fagot was among those in Foxborough for a workout on Monday per the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed.
Fagot was a team captain at Navy, a two-time All-AAC player, and led them in total tackles during his last three seasons. He spent time with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023.
UPDATE: The Patriots signed Fagot, per Tom Pelissero.
WR Jalen Hurd
Now this one’s interesting. A running back turned wide receiver, Jalen Hurd played collegiately at both Tennessee and Baylor before being drafted by the 49ers in the third round of the 2019 draft. He’s been notoriously injured, however, spending his first three NFL seasons on IR, and was released by San Francisco this past November.
Hurd now enters an (also injury-prone) wide receiver room in New England where he, if healthy, could be an additional playmaker in the versatile Bill O’Brien offense.
UPDATE: The Patriots also worked out WR Darion Chafin, DT Aaron Crawford, and DT Khalil Davis on Monday.
