Jakobi Meyers played quarterback in high school and has had some success throwing on a few trick plays during his NFL career. On Sunday, he threw the worst pass of his career, and it cost the Patriots dearly.

With the clock already at zeroes and the game seemingly headed for overtime, Meyers caught a lateral from Rhamondre Stevenson, which was already an unnecessarily risky and foolish play on its own.

Meyers made things much worse, though, turning around to throw a backwards pass to quarterback Mac Jones that got picked off by Las Vegas Raiders defender Chandler Jones and returned for a walk-off touchdown.

Meyers answered questions about the disastrous play after the game and took full responsibility for what happened.

Was the plan to lateral the ball there?

“No. Just trying to do too much. Trying to be a hero, I guess. I ain’t see the dude back there. Tried throwing the ball. Like I said, I was trying to do too much. Should’ve just went down.”

Did you know the score was tied?

“Yeah.”

Was there any communication about trying to make something happen?

“No, that was just me. That was me.”

No communication in the huddle?

“No. I promise you that was just me trying to make a play.”

What was the final message in the huddle?

“Just run the ball, go down. I got the ball. I made a play.”

Did Stevenson say anything to you about maybe pitching it?

“Nah, not that I can remember.”

Were you surprised that he pitched it to you?

“Whether he did or not, that ain’t his fault. He gave me the ball, I have to be smart with it.”

What did you see as you were throwing it?

“I thought I saw Mac open. I didn’t see Chandler Jones at the time. Just thought he was open, tried to get it to him, let him make a play with it. But the score was tied, so like I said, I should’ve gone down.”
