Jakobi Meyers signs second-round tender, will continue negotiations with Patritos

The Patriots officially have their leading receiver from last year back under contract for 2022.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports fourth-year receiver Jakobi Meyers, who put up a career-best 866 yards receiving last year and was Mac Jones' favorite receiving target, has signed the second-round tender worth $3.986 million that he was offered as a restricted free agent. Had he let the offer expire before the June 15 deadline set by the league, his salary would've reverted to $935,000 for the 2022 season.

Schefter added that Meyers and agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey will continue to work toward a long-term deal with the Patriots .

If no additional agreement is reached, Meyers will hit unrestricted free agency in 2023, where he could find himself priced out of New England after improving his numbers in each of his last two seasons and recording his first two NFL touchdowns in 2021.

The Patriots similarly placed a second-round tender on J.C. Jackson, who, like Meyers, signed with the Patriots as an unrestricted free agent out of college. Jackson, who blossomed into an All-Pro cornerback, left New England in free agent on a lucrative deal with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Though Meyers won't command as much as Jackson, the recent free-agent markets for wide receivers could make keeping the slot receiver a challenge.
