Jared Goff doesn’t make sense for a number of teams, especially the Patriots

Another quarterback was added to the QB carousel Friday when it was reported the Rams are exploring trading Jared Goff.

But, who really wants him?

First of all, his contract is brutal.

The Rams would have to take on $22.2 million in dead cap money, plus their new quarterback’s salary, and the team trading for him would take on his four-year, $134 million contract that includes $43.3 million in fully-guaranteed payments due in 2021 and 2022.

And secondly, is he really a $30-plus million QB?

He is incredibly durable, playing in at least 15 games ever since becoming a starter in 2017, but the problem is he’s very inconsistent. A perfect example came late in the year in 2020. Against Tampa Bay on Nov. 23 he went 39-for-51 passing with 376 yards to go along with three touchdowns and two interceptions in a win on the road. The following week he went 19-for-31 passing with 198 yards and two interceptions in a three-point loss to the 49ers at home, a team that didn’t make the playoffs.

Goff has been surrounded by a great supporting cast and has only been able to get to the Super Bowl once and besides that hasn’t advanced past the divisional round. Also, it seems at times Sean McVay’s play-calling is to make sure Goff doesn’t make a mistake, which usually isn’t the case for a No. 1 overall pick.

Specific to the Patriots, it doesn’t seem like he’s a fit at all.

Why would they want to use roughly half their cap space on him on top of giving something up in order to acquire him when they have so many needs on the roster? And even if the money and compensation wasn't an issue, he just doesn’t seem like someone Bill Belichick, Josh McDaniels and Co. would want to lead the offense.

While Goff could impact the rest of the league in terms of QB movement this offseason, don’t expect the Patriots to be involved.
