Ever since joining NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” last summer, the longtime defensive back has stood out for his strong commentary and easy sense of humor. Now he can add news breaker to his repertoire.
On Thursday, McCourty was the first to report the Patriots had re-signed long snapper Joe Cardona to a four-year deal. The Naval Academy alumnus is the second-longest tenured member of the team, next to Matthew Slater.
The 13-year NFL vet received well-deserved kudos for his scoop, including from his twin brother, Devin McCourty. It seems like Devin is following Jason’s path to broadcast media post-retirement, given his recent appearances on multiple outlets, including an in-studio segment on “The Greg Hill Show.”
One of the traits that makes Jason McCourty stand out is his willingness to be critical when necessary. For example: while most of the NFL media is portraying Aaron Rodgers’ seemingly inevitable move to the Jets as a win-win, he’s questioned whether the Packers should move on from their all-time great passer.
“Are you sure Jordan Love is the one you want to marry?,” he asked recently.
Given the proliferation of digital media and podcasts, there are multiple ways for players to break into broadcaster. Chris Long, for example, has said he’s fine with staying away from television.
McCourty, meanwhile, is taking a more traditional path. He’s developing his brand on cable, and taking advantage of NFL Media’s massive platform.
So far, it’s working out.
