Jerod Mayo received a head-coaching interview last year after just two seasons as a positional coach, and it appears he could be a target of teams once again following this season.
Mayo appeared on NFL Media's Tom Pelissero annual list of rising head-coaching candidates released Wednesday.
“His pedigree and makeup are intriguing,” Pelissero wrote.
After his interview last offseason the Eagles “came away impressed with his rare leadership traits," according to Pelissero.
This summer, Mayo acknowledged he would like to be a head coach eventually.
“Yeah, I definitely have aspirations to be a head coach,” he said. “But (right now, I’m) really focused on this team. And we have a great head coach here in New England. But that is the goal. That is the goal. I think I could do it — well, I should say I know I can do it. I’m just waiting for my chance to really come to fruition.”
Mayo is currently the Patriots' inside linebackers coach.
