6 rings: Is reality starting to settle in for the 2023 Patriots?
Patriots cornerback Jonathan Jones hasn’t practiced with the Patriots since August 3, the day before their in-stadium practice in Foxborough two weeks ago.
Normally when a player is out for this amount of time, alarm bells go off. Luckily for New England, it doesn't sound like this is the case for Jones.
According to MassLive’s Karen Guregian, Jones “seems to be OK” and the team is simply being careful with him.
Karen added that he should be ready to go in a couple of weeks, and followed up her reporting with a tweet stating that Jones “should be back” for the Patriots season opener versus the Eagles on September 10.
Jones re-signed with the club this offseason on a two-year, $19 million deal with a $7.5 million signing bonus. The contract also includes $13 million. The seven-year NFL veteran will take on more of a leadership role following Devin McCourty’s departure from the secondary.
On Friday morning, Patriots cornerback coach Mike Pellegrino spoke on Jones and what he means to the cornerback room:
"He's doing the best he can, and he's trying to get better every day. I love Jon. Jon's in the room, he's like a second coach in there. Every time we're talking, he can always add in an extra piece of advice in the meeting room."
