Jonnu Smith is one of the better tight ends in the NFL, so when he was a free agent last week he obviously had multiple suitors.

So, why did he sign with the Patriots?

"It just seemed like the perfect opportunity," he said on a video conference Tuesday. "From knowing what I know, I believe that everything they stand for kind of matches my football DNA. I just couldn’t pass the opportunity. I believe this franchise has everything it needs – all the right ingredients. I am honored and blessed to be apart of that.”

Smith called last Monday, the day he agreed to sign, one of the best days of his life.

“I consider myself a spiritual man, so I just dug deeper and kind of connected with the man upstairs and it kind of just led me to my decision," he said. "It was one of the greatest days of my life, one of the most exciting days of my life, one of the most thrilling days of my life — to be able to start a new chapter, a fresh start, a new journey. I am ecstatic. Going back to that day, I cried all I could. I don’t want to start tearing up in this interview again.”

The 25-year-old will now team up with Hunter Henry as the pair will be one of the best tight ends tandems in the entire league.

The two players have combined for 20 touchdowns the last two seasons.
