If Bill Belichick remains as the Patriots head coach next season, a familiar face could be returning to Foxborough as well.

According to The Athletic's Jeff Howe, former New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels could rejoin the Patriots' coaching staff if they keep their head coach in place.

McDaniels coached in New England from 2001-2008 and then again from 2012-2021 before leaving to become the head coach of the Raiders. He was fired in Las Vegas this past October.

A six-time Super Bowl champion with the Patriots, McDaniels was spotted in Foxborough this past weekend by the AP’s Kyle Hightower as he entered Gillette Stadium ahead of the Patriots season finale vs. the Jets. It was later reported by Howe that the coach and his family were in attendance in Foxborough, “as fans in what could be Matthew Slater’s final game.”

The addition of McDaniels to Belichick's staff, according to Howe, could help the head coach's proposal to Robert and Jonathan Kraft as he lays out "a firm plan to dramatically improve the on-field product after the [team's] worst record (4-13) of Kraft’s ownership." He added that, "if Kraft believes Belichick can rehire McDaniels to improve the offense, it’s conceivable that could sway Kraft toward giving Belichick another season."

The head coach and ownership reportedly "had an initial discussion on Monday", and are expected to meet at least once more before a final decision is made on the future of the franchise.
