Josh McDaniels defends Cam Newton following performance vs. Cardinals

Sunday's game against the Cardinals was not Cam Newton's finest performance.

The quarterback was 9-for-18 passing with a career-low 84 yards and two interceptions.

Speaking via conference call Tuesday, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was asked if he has full faith in Newton as a passer and he responded quickly with, "absolutely."

McDaniels expanded on that by noting the passing game isn't all about the quarterback.

“The passing game is a function of a lot of people doing things right,” he said. “I know the quarterback is the centerpiece of throwing the football, but we don’t throw the ball well without everybody doing their job right and without putting the players in position to be successful.

“So I just start with me and just try to put the guys in a position where they can go out there and do something, be aggressive, run good routes, understand what the coverage is and give the quarterback opportunities to find guys and throw the football and throw and catch it. Our protection has to be good, our routes have to be crisp, and then obviously, we’ve got to be accurate and we’ve got to catch the football. Not to mention blitz pickup and those types of things that also come into play.

“Passing the football well has never been one man’s job, and it will never be that way. So we’ve got to do a good job of executing as a group, as a unit, and I’ve got to do a good job of trying to put them in position to be able to do that.”

As it stands now, the Patriots rank 29th in the league in terms of passing offense.
