Josh McDaniels acknowledges he needs to do better job of getting Jonnu Smith the ball

Overall, Patriots tight end Jonnu Smith has been a disappointment this season.

The veteran, who signed a four-year deal worth $50 million and $31.25 million guaranteed this offseason, has a total of 27 catches for 274 yards and a touchdown over the first 15 games.

Over the last five, he has just six receptions on 10 targets, which speaking Tuesday, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said he needs to do a better job of getting him the ball.

"He's a player that can do some things with the ball in his hands," he said to reporters. "We know that. Very talented guy, works really hard. I've got to do better to get him the ball."

Smith is known for his yards after catch and those are pretty much there with what he's had in the past. Going into Week 17 he has 209 this season, which comes after a total of 238 last year.

While the tight end has primarily been used as a blocker of late, the offense could use a boost over the final two regular-season games and into the playoffs.
