The news on Julian Edelman’s knee is grim.
The beloved wideout is dealing with chronic knee issues, reports Karen Guregian of the Herald, and likely won’t play the full 2021 season. A source familiar with Edelman’s thinking told Guregian it’s “doubtful” he’ll suit up for all 16 games.
Edelman, 35, has battled knee issues for the better part of the last two years. He was placed on injured reserve after undergoing minor knee surgery last October.
“While surgery can provide temporary relief, nothing can solve the underlying problem,” Guregian reports.
With Edelman’s status in limbo, the Patriots may opt to cut him before the season starts. They would only incur a $2.6 million cap hit, saving about $3.4 million.
Given the Patriots spent lavishly on pass-catchers in free agency — Jonnu Smith, Hunter Henry, Nelson Agholor and Kendrick Bourne — it’s apparent they wisely weren’t counting on Edelman to be a big contributor, anyway.
Edelman caught 21 passes in six games last season for 315 yards and two touchdowns. He’s been part of three Super Bowl winners, capturing MVP honors in Super Bowl LIII.
