Without a true No. 1 option in the passing game, the Patriots need someone to step up and it seems like that player could be Kendrick Bourne.
After recording five catches for 61 yards on Sunday against the Titans, he now has recorded at least four catches in three straight games. But, the biggest difference Sunday was he made plays -- two touchdowns, including one that went for 41 yards.
“I definitely thought I was going to get hit," Bourne said of the play. "Shoutout to Jakobi [Meyers] with the great block. That was what made the whole play. He’s been doing that his whole career, blocking really well, and he caught a really good block right there. Giving that extra effort he gave really spurred me, so shoutout to him, but just a good play overall by the whole group.”
Bourne was able to stay in bounds and avoid Titans defenders for the touchdown, which put the Patriots on top 26-13 at the time in the third quarter.
The fifth-year pro now is up to 623 receiving yards on the year, which are 48 yards shy of a career high.
"It was a great play by KB," Bill Belichick said, referring to his long touchdown catch. "He's done that a few times. You know, those explosive plays are just such game-changers."
Bourne making plays like Sunday are huge for the Patriots offense because it takes some pressure off Meyers and Hunter Henry.
We'll see how the rest of the year plays out, but Bourne emerging as a No. 2 receiver would be huge for the offense and team.
