The biggest storyline with the Patriots since Mac Jones was drafted was the quarterback position and what the depth chart will look like come Week 1 of the regular season.

Cam Newton remains atop the depth chart, but Mac Jones (as well as Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer) are behind him fighting for that top spot.

Speaking to reporters following Thursday's OTA, Jones discussed his relationship with Newton.

"He’s done an awesome job being a good mentor," Jones said. "He brings great energy. Brian and Jarrett have done a good job helping me in the film room. All three of them, just watch their reps and learn as much as I can.”

The rookie also revealed it didn't take long for Newton to give him a nickname, which is a thing for Newton to do with his teammates.

"He calls me Mac n’ cheese, so I’ve got my nickname," Jones said.

The Alabama product acknowledged there's competition among the four quarterbacks, but it's not unhealthy or anything like that.

“We’re just coming in every day — there’s four guys in total and I am the rookie, so I am just learning from them," Jones said. "They have all been very nice to me, treated me well and I am just trying to help them out as much as I can, too. Whatever I can do. We’re all in this together, so it’s not like — there’s competition, but I don’t want to have a misconstrued word there, like it’s bad competition or it’s unhealthy. We’re all close and we’re all going to get better together. That is what we’re going to do.”

Newton has missed this past week with a hand injury and is expected to be out next week as well when the Patriots have minicamp Monday-Wednesday.
