Mac Jones explains his quick release, which has stood out at Patriots training camp

FOXBOROUGH -- Through the first three days of Patriots training camp, the No. 1 thing to stand out with rookie Mac Jones is his quick release.

For the most part, the rookie drops back, plants his back foot and gets rid of the football. This has obviously continued the comparisons to Tom Brady, as that was a staple with the Patriots offense during his time with the team.

Speaking following practice Friday, the rookie was asked about his quick release.

“My whole thing is whatever the play tells you to do, do it," Jones said. "I’m trying to get there. I’m getting better. I don’t feel like I’m lost out there, but you gotta be able to throw the ball to the right guy based on the coverage, based on the problem. That’s a ball that’s supposed to be thrown quick to your first lead and get it out. If not, just make it a process to where you’re sticking to it. It’s not, ‘Oh, I think it’s this,’ or, ‘Let me try this,’ it’s, ‘I see this. Let me do this.’"

Like Newton, Jones acknowledged there is a competition for the starting job, but at the end of the day it is about making everyone better.

“We’re all competing for a job or whatever, and our goal is to win, so I guess they’re obviously going to play the best player and that’s going to be whoever it may be," Jones said. "I’m just here to work, and, like you said, I mean, I got to get better, so I’m young and I know that. I have to produce on the field and do exactly what I’m supposed to do on each play and fix every problem. When you do that, things will work out.”

Day 4 of training camp will be Saturday morning at 9:45 a.m.
