While the Patriots beat the Chargers 27-24 in Los Angeles Sunday afternoon, it was not Mac Jones' best game of the season.
The rookie finished 18-for-35 passing with 218 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. The Chargers seemed to throw him off his game, especially in the second quarter.
After starting the game 6-for-9 passing, Jones then went 2 for his next 13.
Appearing on Merloni & Fauria Monday afternoon, the Patriots rookie detailed what he needs to work on and acknowledged he had a bad week of practice ahead of the game.
“There’s a lot (I need to work on)," he said. "I think improving my feet, just the timing in the passing game. I just need to improve that and know what I am supposed to do with the ball on certain plays. I just need to be more consistent and there will be drills and things I can do to improve that, but at the end of the day we won and that’s great and all, but you have to look at what actually happened and how we can improve.
"I don’t think there’s anything dramatic or anything like that, but there just has to be a lot for us to improve to keep winning. We didn’t have our best day, or I didn’t have my best day, so it’s just going out there and practicing well. I didn’t have a great week of practice last week and that just translates to the game. You have to bring it every day.”
While it wasn't Jones' best day, the Patriots have now scored at least 25 points in four straight weeks, so the offense is starting to click.
“The group that we have is molding more together a lot better," he said. "There’s a lot of room to improve. I think we had a good help from the defense yesterday, too. We got a defensive touchdown and they gave us on special teams a short field a couple of times. That always helps. And everyone else is just doing their job and not looking at the scoreboard and just playing. If we play good, all 11 guys on offense, we know what the score will look like. But, if we don’t play good, or nine of us play good and two of us don’t, then it’s not going to be as good of a result. It takes all 11. At the end of the day, just getting the win and learning from your mistakes is better than having a great day or whatever and losing. You just have to look at the big picture.”
Now at 4-4 on the year, the Patriots will take on the Panthers this week.
