When it comes to the Patriots' additions in free agency, tight ends Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith get the majority of the attention, but on the defensive side of the ball Matt Judon certainly deserves some recognition.
The outside linebacker/defensive end has made the Pro Bowl each of the last two seasons and the Patriots gave him a four-year deal worth up to $56 million.
Judon spoke to the New England media for the first time via video conference on Wednesday.
“I was in Orlando at Disney with my daughter for her spring break," he said when discussing how the deal came together. "It moved fast. It was calls back and forth from my agents and we fielded offers and within three hours we had a deal. It moved fast, but it was a good experience. It was a very good experience. … It worked out how it was supposed to work out. I think I am in the best situation possible for my football career.”
The 28-year-old seems like a good fit for the Patriots' defensive scheme, especially when it comes to his ability to set the edge.
Judon was able to briefly speak to Bill Belichick.
"He gave an overview of the team and how they run things and everything," he said of the conversation. "He just kept it very him, and it was funny, and it was good. That's how he did it. Obviously we'll have a lot more conversations coming up."
Along with Kyle Van Noy, Chase Winovich, Josh Uche and Anfernee Jennings, the Patriots' pass rush should be much better than it was a year ago when it finished 27th in the NFL in sacks.
