A major topic with the Patriots following the 2021 season is they do not have a defensive coordinator and either Jerod Mayo or Steve Belichick needs to get the title.
Appearing on Merloni & Fauria from Radio Row, Patriots edge rusher Matthew Judon explained why the topic is a little overrated.
“I don’t think it really matters, honestly," he said. "You talk to your position coach more than you talk to the defensive coordinator. We all got a position coach and Coach Steve Belichick, he calls the plays. Mayo leads the meetings and kind of directs how it is going to go, but all of our coaches kind of do that. All of our coaches are in charge of their own meetings, own players.”
Judon said even in Baltimore he communicated more with his position coach than defensive coordinator.
“I think that’s easier than in a defensive meeting with safeties, outside linebackers, inside linebackers, D-line, when we’re all in that meeting, stopping the meeting and be like, ‘OK, for my position, is that where I am supposed to be?’ Instead of only in our position [meeting] making sure, ‘If this is what happens, this is what we’re supposed to do.’”
Judon finished the season with 12.5 sacks, tying a Patriots franchise record for a single season.
