jones & mego: Jones doesn't want JJ McCarthy and his hippy no shoes routine in New England
Matthew Slater can't kick the whole football thing.
According to ESPN's Mike Reiss, the former Patriots special teamer and captain has accepted a role on Jerod Mayo's staff.
Slater, who retired from football in late February after a 16-year career in Foxborough, was among those in attendance for the start of New England's offseason program -- sparking some interest in what he's doing around the building.
According to Reiss, Slater's role with the team is as a "right-hand man" to Jerod Mayo. He will provide Mayo "a sounding board on football and team building, as well as assistance in 'people development.'"
"Having Slate in the locker room," safety Jabrill Peppers said earlier this month when asked about his former teammate remaining with the organization. "He uplifts the spirits, always knew what to say. I’m definitely happy we kept him in the building."
