Josh McDaniels seems to be building his own version of Patriots West.
The Raiders are hiring Mick Lombardi as their offensive coordinator, according to Adam Schefter. Patriots offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo is also reportedly making the move to Vegas.
The Raiders hired McDaniels in tandem with former Patriots personnel man Dave Ziegler. He's already ousted a couple fixtures in Vegas' player personnel department.
While Lombardi wasn’t on the Patriots’ staff for long, he was named receivers coach in his second season with the club. There were some rightful questions about nepotism surrounding Lombardi’s ascent: his father, Mike Lombardi, is one of Bill Belichick’s closest confidants.
Bricillo joined the Patriots in 2019, becoming offensive line coach the following season.
There are many questions about how Belichick will fill out his staff in light of McDaniels’ departure. The Patriots hired Joe Judge as an offensive assistant last week. No word on whether they intend to incorporate QB sneaks on 3rd-and-9 into their playbook.
On Friday, Mike Lombardi told Merloni and Fauria that Belichick will likely be the de facto offensive coordinator next season. The Patriots also haven’t had a formal defensive coordinator for several seasons.
As Belichick ages, he keeps adding more to his plate. He'll turn 70 in April.
