Mike Lombardi via OMF could envision Patriots drafting QB while bringing Cam Newton back

The Patriots' quarterback situation beyond this year is still a major topic of discussion, as it really is anyone's guess what will happen.

Appearing on Ordway, Merloni & Fauria Friday, former Patriots executive Mike Lombardi said he could see the Patriots drafting a quarterback and bring Cam Newton back for a second season.

“That’s a hard one for me to answer," he said. "I think for me, I think where they sit in the draft there’s going to be a lot of teams — Indianapolis is going to be a team after a quarterback as well. I think the draft ideally would be the best place to go to go get a young quarterback to develop if they can get up there and get one. I think that is ultimately what they would have to do. If they like somebody, go get him.

“I think you could bring Cam back and still go get a quarterback. I am not sure what the solution is in the interim. I don’t think it’s Ryan Fitzpatrick for that, I don’t think it is that. I don’t know what the solution is and I don’t know what the offseason is going to bring. I mean, there’s going to be a lot of jobs open. Do you think Josh McDaniels is coming back? How does that play into the decision? There are so many variables. … There are so many variables that it’s just not a straight line.”

Newton will be a free agent and as it stands now the Patriots would be selecting in the middle of the first round.
