Free agency is over a month away, but it's never too early to start talking about what the Patriots might do.
They have the fourth-most cap space in the NFL, so they will have plenty of options.
Appearing on Ordway, Merloni & Fauria Friday, former Patriots executive Mike Lombardi was asked what he would do if he was GM of the team?
“The game hasn’t really changed. You better get a blue-chip quarterback," he said. "You better get a quarterback, and then you better repair the offensive and defensive lines as best as you can. That’s the game of football. That is what football has always been about. Who wins the game has the best quarterback, the best offensive line. For me, I think that’s where you start. The offensive line has some pieces in place. I think there has to be great improvement to the offensive line and then you’ve got to get yourself some skill players. You need a tight end to control the middle of the field, that’s something you didn’t have. You played last year without a tight end and that’s a very challenging job to do.”
Lombardi believes because of their cap space, they will be in the mix for Matthew Stafford. He also thinks the Lions could trade their QB as soon as this coming week.
In addition, Jimmy Garoppolo is also a potential option as the Patriots and 49ers could swing another trade involving the quarterback.
